ICE Deports Over 500 Immigrants in One Week: What Houston Families Need to Know

As an immigration attorney based in Texas, it’s heartbreaking—but unfortunately not surprising—to report that ICE has conducted another aggressive raid in our own backyard. Over a seven-day period in April, ICE officers arrested 422 undocumented immigrants and deported 528 individuals during a targeted operation centered in the Houston area.

According to ICE officials, this latest wave of enforcement focused on individuals with final deportation orders and those with past criminal convictions. But in reality, many families are now shattered, and long-standing members of our community—people who have lived, worked, and paid taxes here for years—have been torn away from their children and loved ones. With ICE Deporting Over 500 Immigrants, you must be prepared for anything.

“Operations like these instill fear, not safety, in immigrant communities,” says Norberto Gonzalez, lead attorney at Restrepo & DWI Law. “We’ve seen firsthand how raids are disrupting hard-working families who pose no danger to anyone.”

Who Was Targeted while ICE Deports Over 500 Immigrants?

ICE claims the sweep was aimed at individuals with serious criminal backgrounds. However, many of those affected were longtime residents, some of whom were detained during routine check-ins or pic

ked up during collateral arrests—meaning they were not the original targets of enforcement actions but were caught up in the process simply for being undocumented.

These actions are a stark reminder that immigration enforcement does not always align with justice or compassion.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you or a family member is undocumented—even if you’ve never had trouble with the law—it’s important to understand your rights and prepare for the possibility of an ICE encounter. We highly recommend the following:

  • Carry a Know-Your-Rights card at all times.

  • Do not open the door if ICE comes to your home without a signed warrant.

  • Do not speak to ICE or sign any documents without first speaking to an immigration attorney.

  • Develop a family safety plan in case someone is detained.
